Chartering ministry:

Purpose:

To make a contribution to integrated development of the region by implementing investigation and research, collecting and providing information and dealing with other activities for comprehensive development and improvement of the Tohoku region, as well as creating a think-tank network system in the region,.

History:

Along with the enactment of three laws relating to the development of the Tohoku region, the formulation of “Tohoku Development Promotion Plan”, and so on, the Tohoku Economic Development Center was established by representatives from industry, academia and the governments of the seven prefectures of the Tohoku region as promoters, and chartered by the then Economic Planning Agency in April 1961. In the early 1980’s, both the private sector and governments of the Tohoku region brought up the necessity of creating a think-tank network system in the region for integrated development and improvement of the region. As a result, in August 1984, the organization was expanded and enhanced into the Tohoku Regional Development Center, chartered by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transportation, based on agreement of industry, academia and the governments of the seven prefectures of the Tohoku region.

  1. Investigation and research, and making proposals -  Independent investigation and research -  Commissioned investigation and research
  2. Providing education/training, and enlightenment activities -  Holding Tohoku development seminars -  Holding lecture meetings, symposiums, study meetings, and so on
  3. Providing information -  Publishing a publication titled Tohoku Development Research -  Collecting and providing materials on development of the Tohoku region and the region’s issues for public reading
